Buying used shipping containers saves 60–70% of the budget. For a batch of 100 TEU, this represents a difference of up to $150,000 compared to new units. This saving is achieved through condition grades: CW (Cargo Worthy), WWT (Wind and Water Tight), or As-Is (sold as is, without warranties).

However, a single container with hidden undercarriage corrosion or a crack in a corner post turns this saving into a loss: repair costs, downtime, and breached contracts.

For fleet owners managing 50 to 500 TEU, pre-purchase due diligence is margin protection. Let's break down its three stages:

  1. Legal: documents, ownership history, liens, and seizures.

  2. Technical: corrosion, frame geometry, watertightness, floor, and door condition.

  3. Financial: residual value, logistics costs, and additional expenses.

Legal Due Diligence: Verifying Origin and Encumbrances

The first stage of due diligence is not inspecting the steel, but verifying the documents. Hidden legal issues often surface after the purchase, turning the deal into a financial loss.

Key Verification Points

  • Valid CSC Plate: The CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) safety approval plate on the container body. Verify its presence, the validity of the information, and when/by whom it was installed.

  • Absence of Encumbrances: The container must not appear in registries of seized property. In international practice, equipment is sometimes seized for the debts of the previous owner or carrier. Buying such a container means litigation and loss of the asset.

Technical Inspection: What Hides Beneath the Paint

The second stage is the physical inspection of each unit. A visual "eyeball" assessment does not work: serious structural damage can hide beneath fresh paint.

Key Inspection Points

  • Load-Bearing Structures: Corner posts, top and bottom side rails, and frame cross members form the container's structural skeleton. Deformations, cracks, or signs of poor welding repairs are critical. Restoring load-bearing structures is economically unviable; repair costs may exceed the purchase price.

  • Watertightness: The container must fully protect the cargo from moisture. Verification is done via a "light test": the inspector goes inside and closes the doors. Any beam of light penetrating through gaps indicates defective seals or compromised door geometry.

  • Floor Condition: Wooden or bamboo flooring must not have rotted areas, deep cracks, or signs of chemical contamination. Floor replacement is an expensive operation that eats up the savings from buying used.

  • Hardware and Locking Mechanisms: Door locking rods, hinges, and handles must operate without play (slop). Replacing hardware on every container in a 100-unit batch adds an extra $3,000–$5,000 in expenses.

  • Internal Surface: Walls must not have dents deeper than 25 mm, through-holes, or corrosion that compromises structural integrity.

  • Standard Compliance: Following the inspection, the used container is classified into one of the standards:

    • Cargo Worthy (CW): Fit for cargo transport, meets basic requirements.

    • Wind and Water Tight (WWT): Watertight, but may have cosmetic defects.

    • As-Is: Sold without warranties, requires repair.

Note: Only CW and WWT standards are suitable for commercial freight use. Buying "As-Is" is justified only if the buyer has in-house repair facilities and an exact restoration cost calculation. As-Is may be suitable for alternative (non-freight) repurposing.

Financial Assessment: The Real Cost of Ownership

The third stage of due diligence is calculating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) after purchase. The purchase price is only 30–40% of the real costs.

What to Factor In

  • Repair Costs: Even a CW container may require minor repairs: seal replacement, touch-up painting, or fixing minor dents. For a 100 TEU batch, this means $5,000–$10,000 in additional expenses.

  • Logistics to the Operating Location: Transporting purchased containers from the seller's depot to your storage terminal or loading point creates extra costs. If the seller is in another region or country, the logistics leg can amount to $500–$1,000 per unit.

  • Certification Costs: If a container is bought without a valid CSC certificate, it must be obtained. Inspection and certification cost $50–$100 per unit.

  • Residual Service Life: A used container has a limited lifespan. If the equipment has completed 12 of its 15 years of service, buying it only makes sense at scrap metal prices. The optimal age for purchase is 5–10 years, leaving 5–10 years of operational life ahead.

  • Secondary Market Liquidity: Not all container types are equally liquid. Standard 20ft Dry Vans sell faster and at higher prices than specialized reefers or Open Tops. Buying illiquid equipment risks freezing capital for months.
